Beautiful Bega Valley Sapphire Coast South Coast New South Wales NSW
Bega is an aboriginal word meaning "beautiful" and just one look over this breathtaking valley and you can understand why the name was chosen. The Bega Valley has been providing prime dairy produce for over a hundred years and Bega itself has become an important business and administrative hub for the region. The original butter factory began production in 1890 and the Bega Creamery Co-Op was created in 1899 by local farmers who wanted to control their own industry and Bega brand.
Bega still has a thriving dairy industry with Bega Cheese known world wide. The Bega Cheese factory and Heritage Centre, a faithful reproduction of an early building, is located just north of the town and has an exhibition of early farming and dairying equipment. On the other side of the highway, Grevillea Estate Winery is earning a reputation in the wine industry. Everything is done on the estate, growing, pressing, bottling as well as marketing and distribution. Wines include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Merlot. Bega itself is a bustling country town and a walk around the town offers an insight into the town's history through it's architecture with many old buildings still in use. The Bega Family Museum holds an extensive collection of photographs depicting the past. There are also changing displays which explain the social and working lives of early Bega
