Moruya - Country Town on the (NSW) South Coast
Moruya
has a lot going for it, a thriving fair dinkum country town right on the coast with an absolutely magnificent river winding it's way from the Araluen Valley. First settled by Europeans in 1827 Moruya started life as a farming settlement with two large farms in the area, Shannon View and Kiora. More settlements followed when gold was discovered in the Araluen Valley in 1851. Broulee situated on the coast was the more significant of the two settlements with it's sheltered harbour offering good anchorage for vessels. A flood in 1841 removed a dangerous sandbar at the mouth of the Moruya River allowing access to Moruya by boat and in 1851activities were transferred to the thriving township of MORUYA which was proclaimed a town in 1855.
Birthplace of the Sydney Harbour Bridge
A more recent event occurred in 1924 when granite from the Moruya quarry was used for pylons for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Captain Cook's memorial in Hyde Park and columns of the Sydney GPO. The quarry still exists and can be found on North Head Road as you travel east from town on the way to the Moruya Airport.
Indigenous Heritage
Prior to European settlement Moruya was the home of The Yuin - Guin people with the rich countryside sustaining them for tens of thousands of years with an abundance of wildlife and seafood. The name Moruya is derived from an aboriginal word meaning "home of the black swan". These majestic birds still visit during the breeding season
Commercial Hub
Moruya today has become the commercial hub on the Eurobodalla Shire with the council offices and AIRPORT being located here.Moruya also boasts a race track and motor speedway.
