NAROOMA JEWELL OF THE NEW SOUTH WALES NSW SOUTH COAST
Narooma is derived from the Aboriginal word "Noorooma" meaning "Clear Blue Water" and was later renamed when proclaimed a village in 1886. Surrounded by water, Narooma is one of the prettiest towns on the South Coast. On a sunny day there is nothing to compare to the sunlight shimmering on the blue Pacific Ocean and turquoise waters of Wagonga Inlet.
Montague Island
Montague Island is a prominent feature of the South Coast and lies 9 kms to the east of Narooma. Organised tours to Montague Island Nature Reserve is a must for visitors to the region. Relax aboard one of two licenced chartered vessel and enjoy the 20 minute voyage. Along the way you may encounter pods of migrating whales and schools of friendly dolphins. In the company of a National Parks and Wildlife service tour guide you will land on the island to observe the resident seal colony and other wildlife attractions and explore the magnificent heritage buildings where refreshments are served. Wagonga Inlet
Wagonga Inlet is one of the most beautiful waterways on the South Coast. It provides great fishing opportunities amid spectacular scenery. Charter boats operate scenic tours on the inlet or hire a tinnie where you can catch bream, flathead, whiting and squid just to name a few. There are fabulous picnic areas on the foreshore or dine in style overlooking this beautiful inlet.
For the Adventurous
For those who want to be a little more adventurous Narooma’s deep sea and game fishing is an experience to savor. Montague Island is renowned for it’s yellowfin tuna, kingfish, marlin and sharks. Diving off Montague Island is also popular where wildlife such as greenback turtles and seals abound. In season many species of whales such as the Southern Right, Sperm, Humpback can be found. Twelve kilometres off the coast lies the Continental Shelf which is the very edge of Australia and another great fishing spot.
